Barclay and Company Limiteds first share certificate

When Barclays combined with a number of other private banks in 1896 to form a new public limited company, the former partners and their families were issued with shares of £20 in the new bank, £8 paid up. From 1902, Barclays shares were listed on the Stock Exchange, heralding the start of wider ownership of the Bank.
