Barclays annual general meeting
Photograph taken at the 35th annual general meeting of shareholders of Barclays Bank Limited, held at the Cannon Street Hotel. Frederick Goodenough, by now aged 65, was nearing the end of his illustrious career, and this rare 'action' shot conveys an impression of both his serious and determined demeanour and perhaps the toll that his work had taken. He died in office two years later. On Goodenough's left as we view the platform is William Tuke, his successor, and they are surrounded by other board members and officials. The men at the writing tables below the platform are presumably reporters and stenographers, as detailed accounts of major company meetings were commonly published in papers such as The Times and verbatim transcripts of the proceedings were produced for Barclays.
