Portrait of Stephen Danser
A rare portrait of a country bank clerk: 'Stephen Danser, aged 74 years, 32 of which he has spent in the service of the Norwich and Norfolk Bank, 3 November 1813.' Danser was one of the early clerks in the service of the Quaker Gurneys, whose Norwich bank, founded in 1775, was the nucleus of what grew to be the leading banking group in East Anglia. The original portrait is on long-term loan to The National Trust at Peckover House, where it can be seen in a recreation of the old bank at Wisbech, which was part of the Gurney group of banks.
