The sign of the grasshopper and the liver bird
This sign was a common site on branches of Martins Bank during the 1960s. The grasshopper was the symbol of Sir Thomas Gresham, the Tudor banker to whom Martins Bank traced their lineage. The liver bird was the symbol of the Bank of Liverpool. When the two merged in 1918, the two symbols were brought together.
