By the 1970s, recruits from the post-war school leaver intake were able to join the management development programme after three years, and thus compete with graduates for senior management and directorship careers. Separate recruitment and conditions for men and women were brought to an end as a consequence of the Labour governments' equality legislation of the early 70s.
