In 1925, on the formation of Barclays Bank (DCO), Barclays inherited the Colonial Bank's business in the territory known as Gold Coast that had been established there since 1917. Barclays Bank of Ghana with 25 branches was incorporated locally in 1970 as a wholly owned subsidiary of Barclays Bank (DCO). In 1976 the government of Ghana took a 40% interest in the bank, though this holding was bought back by Barclays in 2003.
