Barclays National Bank Limited (Barnat)
Barclays National Bank Ltd (BARNAT) was incorporated in South Africa on 1 October 1971 to continue the business of Barclays Bank (DCO) in South Africa and South West Africa, as a wholly owned subsidiary of Barclays Bank International Ltd. The head office in Johannesburg controlled 856 offices. The chairman was A S Aiken and Chief General Manager, H S Morony. In 1985 Barclays National Bank became an associate company of the Group when the shareholding fell to 40.4%.
The entire shareholding was sold in 1986 and the name subsequently changed to First National Bank of Southern Africa. On 1 July 1999 Rand Merchant Bank merged with First National Bank of Southern Africa and the name changed to FirstRand Bank Ltd.
