British Linen Bank

The British Linen Bank was established in Scotland by charter in 1746. On 3 November 1919, Barclays acquired nearly all the stock in the British Linen Bank, but continued to operate it as a separate affiliated entity. In 1969, a friendly amalgamation between the British Linen Bank and the Bank of Scotland was agreed with Barclays taking a third of the capital of the amalgamated bank. Barclays sold its 34.3% stake in the Bank of Scotland to Standard Life Assurance in 1985.

Most of the records are held by Lloyds Banking Group Archives, however, Barclays Group Archives do hold the following material:

  • printed charters of the Bank
  • some annual reports and accounts 1960s
