Eaton, Cayley and Co, Stamford

This bank was established in circa 1800 by William Jackson and William Johnson. Jackson died circa 1811 and Stephen Eaton, who had been a banker at Thrapston, was taken into the partnership and eventually passed the Thrapston bank on to the Eland family. William Johnson died in 1819 and Edward Cayley was taken into the partnership. The style became Eaton and Cayley, and so remained until the bank was taken over by the Stamford, Spalding and Boston Bank in 1891. The bank is notable for having produced one of the very few women partners in British banks. Charlotte Eaton (née Waldie) carried on the business as senior partner after the death of her husband Stephen in 1834, until her own death in 1859, as well as being a published author, notably of a popular travel book on Rome.
