Gurneys, Birkbeck, Barclay, Buxton and Orde (Yarmouth and Suffolk Bank)
The Yarmouth Bank was an offshoot of Gurneys' Norwich Bank which was established in 1775. Banking in Yarmouth was started as part of the business of James Turner, who was in partnership with his uncle James Dawson. They established a firm of merchants importing iron from Sweden. The business extended to other commodities, and eventually included local banking services. The relationship with the Gurneys seems to have pre-dated the official establishment of the Norwich Bank in 1775 as Turner and Dawson used Gurney bank notes in 1774. In 1781, Turner entered into a full partnership with Richard Bartlett and Joseph Gurney to form the Yarmouth Bank. On his death in 1794 he was succeeded in the partnership by his son Dawson Turner.
