National Bank of Malawi
In 1918 the National Bank of South Africa acquired the banking business of African Lakes Corporation in Nyasaland which had been established in the 1890s. Barclays inherited the National Bank of South Africa's business in the territory, which became independent as Malawi in 1964. In July 1971 a joint venture with Standard Bank created the National Bank of Malawi in which the government held 49% and Barclays Bank International and Standard Bank 25.5% each. Standard Bank acquired Barclays' share of the National Bank of Malawi in 1983.
