Simpson, Chapman and Co, Whitby Old Bank
The bank was founded in 1785 by Wakefield Simpson, a draper and grocer who also operated a small banking business from his shop in Whitby Market Place. His success encouraged him to establish a permanent bank with Abel Chapman as partner, the latter being a member of a prominent Whitby family. The business remained in the hands of the two families until 1892, when it was acquired by the York Union Banking Co Ltd. In 1902 the York Union Banking Co Ltd became incorporated with Barclay and Co Ltd.
