Entered market

1972

Following the establishment of a group representative's office in 1972, which opened in Sao Paolo, in 1973, Barclays acquired a 33.33% shareholding in the investment banking and consumer financing affiliates of Banco de Credito Nacional. These were Banco de Investimentos BCN (medium term industrial finance) and Financiadora BCN (consumer credit finance). In 1988, the holding in Banco de Investimentos BCN was raised to 50%, allowing Barclays to ensure a more effective management strategy, as well as increasing the profile of Barclays within Brazil. Following a series of name changes, this company is now known as Banco Barclays SA, and provides corporate and export/import finance, treasury operations, fund management and underwriting facilities. Holdings in Financiadora BCN were sold in 1990. During the 1970s and 1980s, the Bank's activities in the region were grouped under the Caribbean, Latin and South America (CARLA) business line. In 1982, a regional general managers office (LARO) was opened by Barclays Bank International in London, and by 2000, Barclays Latin America had three main regional offices in London, Miami, and Sao Paulo. In 2009, iShares were launched in the country by Barclays Global Investors. All information is correct as of August 2015.
