Only two years after its UK launch in 1966, Barclaycard was extended to Japan in 1968, followed by the establishment of a Far East representative's office in Tokyo in 1969. Barclays Bank International then established a branch in Tokyo in 1973, followed by a business development office in Osaka. Barclays became the first British bank to have its shares listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange in 1986, and in the same year, Barclays Trust and Banking Company (Japan) was established. The following year, in 1987, Barclays de Zoete Wedd obtained a securities trading office, establishing its presence within the country. By 1988, Barclays was the fifth largest foreign bank in Japan. The 1990s saw the development of a wholesale trading and merchant banking business through Barclays Capital and BGI, whilst the Japanese equities business came to a close. 2005 saw another first for the bank, when Barclays Capital became the first non-Japanese bank to offer electronic trading access to the Tokyo Commodity Exchange. In 2010, a joint venture was announced between Barclays Japan, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation and Nikko Cordial Securities Limited to provide wealth management services. By 2011, Barclays Capital was the top non-domestic bank for equities in Japan, and launched iPath exchange traded notes that year. All information is correct as of August 2015.
