1969

The restructuring of the representative's office in 1969 introduced Barclays to the Netherlands, through the position of the Benelux representative. Barclays' presence was further extended in 1970, when Barclays DCO purchased a 40% stake in Banco Popular Antilliano NV. In 1972, Barclays International acquired a majority stake in Kol and Company, an Amsterdam private bank and stockbroking firm. This established a new company, Barclays Kol and Co NV. In 1974, Barclays Unicorn International formed a new holding company in Amsterdam, Barclays Unicorn International (Netherlands) BV. Two years later, in 1976, Barclays then opened a Business Development Office in Rotterdam. The remaining share capital of Barclays Kol and Co was acquired by Barclays Bank International in 1981, becoming a wholly owned subsidiary company. It was then acquired by Barclays de Zoete Wedd in 1987, becoming Barclays de Zoete Wedd Nederland, BZW's first continental European office. 1988 saw the establishment of Barclays Mercantile Landbouw Financiering, an agricultural leasing business located in Amsterdam. However, in 1996, Barclays Bank PLC ceased retail operations within Amsterdam. In 1998, Barclays Global Investors opened its first continental European office in Amsterdam.
