Barclays Bank International first opened a branch in Seoul in 1977, in addition to acquiring a 20% stake in the Korea Merchant Banking Corporation. In 1989, Barclays de Zoete Wedd opened its first office, and later in 2001, a full branch of Barclays Bank PLC was opened, along with a Barclays Capital Securities office. In conjunction with the Shinhah Card Company, Barclaycard launched the first co-branded credit card in South Korea in 2006, which featured Manchester United.
