1961

Barclays first established a representative's office within Switzerland in 1961. In 1970, Barclays Bank (Dominion, Colonial and Overseas) and Barclays Bank Ltd purchased a controlling share in Society Bancaire de Geneve, creating the Society Bancaire Barclays (Suisse), and in 1978, opened a new branch in Zurich. In 1985, Barclays elected to sell its 64% share in Barclays Bank (Suisse) to minority shareholders, and the following year, Barclays Bank PLC formed a new subsidiary company in Switzerland. Barclays Private Bank then opened an office in Zurich in 1994. Following the creation of a new European company between Barclays Asset and Sales Finance and Iveco SpA in 2005, commercial vehicle financing and leasing solutions were offered to Iveco customers in the UK, Italy, France, Germany and Switzerland. Wealth Intermediaries and Corporates then expanded within Switzerland from its Geneva base, establishing new offices in Zurich and Lugano in 2006. In 2010, Barclays Capital launched Bmarkets, a retail structured investment business within the country, as well as a new Swiss Franc bond business. A new Wealth and Investment Management office was opened in 2012 in Zurich. All information is correct as of August 2015.
