VoloAgri Deal Team | New York, NY, US
Barclays helped raise growth equity for VoloAgri, an agricultural technology company that sits at the intersection of plant biology, environmental sustainability and healthy living. VoloAgri develops and markets drought- and disease-tolerant seeds that use water and fertiliser more efficiently. This helps both large-scale farmers in developed economies and small-scale farmers in emerging markets.
The Barclays deal team, led by Sandeep Patel and Evan Green, established a relationship with the company at its inception in 2012 and has been offering informal assistance ever since. VoloAgri chose Barclays to lead its Series C fundraising round based on the existing relationship, our deep knowledge of agricultural technology and consumer trends, and our extensive global network of investors.
This transaction demonstrates Barclays’ leadership in supporting the growth of pioneering companies that are having a positive environmental and societal impact through the products they develop.

Stepping Stones Community Federal Credit Union Volunteers | Wilmington, DE, US
The team of nine have partnered with Stepping Stones, a community-focused credit union, to enhance their marketing communications to better reach the 22% of unbanked and underbanked people living and working in Wilmington, Delaware.
The team volunteered their professional marketing expertise for more than 600 hours to develop a full-scale marketing campaign for Stepping Stones Community Federal Credit Union.
The aim is to empower the local community to access affordable financial services as an alternative to high-interest and high-fee lenders.
With new branding, enhanced print and digital promotions and better neighbourhood outreach using a one-of-a-kind mobile truck, the team are on track to help Stepping Stones recruit 1,000 new members by 2020. Barclaycard US’ involvement has attracted other financial organisations to get involved, resulting in a $250,000 investment and free ATM access across the city. More people in Wilmington now have the opportunity to follow the path to financial empowerment.

Partnership with The Prince’s Trust | Multiple locations, UK
Barclaycard has partnered with The Prince’s Trust, volunteering on the ‘Together with Team’ programme to give hard-to-reach young people the confidence, skills and opportunities they need to move into education, employment and training.
Barclays’ employee volunteers are now supporting and delivering sessions for 30, 12-week ‘Together with Team’ programmes each year, setting a new standard in corporate volunteering through the depth of engagement, innovative approach and demonstration of an end-to-end commitment. At the outset, the mentors meet with the young people to gain a better understanding of their circumstances, enabling delivery of a bespoke programme, tailored to meet participant needs. Mentors continue to provide support throughout.
Within six months of completion of the programme three-quarters of graduates move into education, employment or training. Feedback from the participants shows that the course is life-changing and instils confidence and aspirations for the future.

Reach Pune Team | Pune, India
Employees in Pune, India, have launched a local branch of Reach, the Barclays Disability Network, to raise awareness, provide practical support to disabled colleagues and ensure Barclays is an accessible and inclusive place to work.
By regularly listening to disabled colleagues to better understand their needs, the team has implemented practical changes to the working environment that are having a positive impact.
The team has increased colleague engagement and disability awareness through a number of communications campaigns, recruited new volunteers and network members and run its first-ever ‘make-a-thon’, which sets a challenge to design and prototype innovative solutions for people with disabilities.
As a result of their hard work and commitment, other Barclays offices in India have been inspired to set up their own local Reach networks. The Reach Pune Team have also extended their support to the local community, by partnering with a school for children with disabilities.

Tono Magokoro Net Employment Support Programme | Tokyo, Japan
Building on their long-running support for those impacted by the tsunami, the Barclays Japan team in partnership with Tono Magokoro Net, are creating sustainable livelihoods and opportunities for the local community.
The tsunami in 2011 had a devastating impact on Iwate Prefecture’s population and economy, killing 18,000 people and destroying 400,000 buildings. What began as immediate disaster recovery assistance has evolved into long-term community revitalisation with the team establishing new, sustainable agricultural businesses that provide job opportunities and skills.
Over the past six years, volunteers have committed a huge amount of their personal time, along with professional business and financial guidance, to help create two vineyards that will deliver a sustainable income stream.
Over the next three years, the businesses will create 15 jobs for disabled adults, provide agricultural skills training for another 120 and offer work experience for more than 900 local young people.

The regional awards ceremonies in Hong Kong, London and New York honoured all our finalists and saw 12 winners, chosen by an external judging panel, celebrated for their contributions to Barclays and wider society.
At the ceremony in London, Jes Staley, Group Chief Executive Officer, said: “This focus on having a positive impact in our communities is not new to Barclays, or indeed our people. It’s been part of our DNA for hundreds of years and it’s one of the reasons I’m proud to lead this institution”.
Clients and Customers winner: High Growth Lending Framework team
Recognising the importance of high-growth entrepreneurs to a vibrant economy, the team has developed a new proposition to enable these businesses to access bank financing at an earlier stage.
The team has leveraged an existing framework and adapted it to suit small companies with high-growth potential at an earlier stage. The framework allows Barclays to support entrepreneurs and small companies while helping them access vital capital to grow and create jobs to employ others.
So far the team has completed 15 later stage loans and three earlier stage loans, with total lending over £60m.
Colleagues winner: Tech for Teachers team
The Tech for Teachers project was created by Barclays Technology employees to help teachers in the UK deliver more exciting and engaging computing lessons as part of the school curriculum.
After volunteering with young people from local schools, the team began to understand the challenges faced by teachers in the UK when delivering IT and computing lessons. The initiative was a great success, with more than 200 teachers attending workshops hosted by the Tech for Teachers team.
Partnerships winner: Barclaycard Action for Children team
The Barclaycard Action for Children team came together to leverage their skills and expertise to help the charity Action for Children enhance its fundraising approach.
A team of ten employees from Barclaycard UK helped Action for Children with their brand positioning, campaign material, analytics, donor engagement and marketing capabilities. As a result of the team’s hard work, Action for Children has reduced its mailing list by a third, saving 38% on campaign costs, while increasing return on investment by 85%.
Action for Children’s online donation volumes have also increased by 32%.
Clients and Customers winner: Jennifer Hitchens
Jennifer embarked on a mission to provide Barclaycard Ring customers with a clearer path to credit health by using Barclaycard US’s consumer commitment to simplicity, transparency and advocacy.
Partnering with FICO, an organisation that provides consumer credit risk scores to lenders, Jennifer connected customers to experts to answer financial questions and developed an online platform to share credit success stories – at no additional cost to the business. The 12-day Ask FICO online event, hosted in the Barclaycard Ring community, created long-term benefits for customers and consumers.
Colleagues winner: Karla Maloof
Karla’s Board membership at Harlem Educational Activities Fund (HEAF), an academic enrichment and youth development programme in New York, has created opportunities for Barclays employees to mentor students while developing their own skills.
Starting as a mentor, Karla has created a productive and sustainable relationship with HEAF, where she now sits on the Board. Karla’s relationship with HEAF has facilitated the involvement of more than 50 Barclays employees from across various business units and functions, which has provided valuable personal and professional development opportunities.
Partnerships winner: Barclaycard's Apache Youth Entrepreneurship Program
Partnering with Johns Hopkins Center for American Indian Health, the team created the Apache Youth Entrepreneurship Program to increase financial stability, improve education outcomes and reduce mental health issues through entrepreneurship.
The programme, aimed at high school students from an Indian Reservation in Arizona, teaches students how to craft a business plan through a summer camp and a year-long afterschool programme. At the end of the curriculum, students join a Barclays business incubator to turn their business plans into real start-ups.
Barclaycard US worked in partnership with Johns Hopkins to create the programme, from writing the curriculum to designing the business incubator. In the initial four years of the programme, students have started 12 businesses and increased their GPAs by 35%.
Clients and Customers winner: Industry Certification T&Cs team
Barclaycard Germany has committed to making terms and conditions (T&Cs) documents easy to understand to empower customers to make more informed financial decisions.
Refreshed insurance T&Cs developed by Barclaycard Germany have achieved industry standard awards and recognition for simplicity, and the TÜV rating ‘very good’, which reflects that customers can easily find and understand this information.
Colleagues winner: Barclays MENA team
Employees from across MENA businesses in Dubai used their professional expertise to set up a series of training courses to upskill the employees of their local facilities management company.
The team used feedback from the employees to design and develop training materials to impact their employability skills and help them progress their careers. Barclays employees then delivered financial literacy and English classes to the workers. The employee-led initiative saw 38 workers complete the programme in 2015, and the team has relaunched the programme for 2016.
Partnerships winner: Davide Spreafico
Davide and the Italy Legal team successfully partnered with Cascina Bianca to support training for people with autism to help them secure jobs.
The training programme helps develop vocational skills to enable the students to get jobs in the restaurant industry. Leveraging Barclays’ sponsorship of Teatro Nazionale, Davide and the team organised a high profile event for World Autism Awareness Day. It brought together experts in the field to discuss and raise awareness about social inclusion, with an emphasis on employment for people with autism. More than 300 people attended the event, including members of the Italian government and medical experts on autism.
Clients and Customers winner: Manish Kumar
Manish and his team developed a solution to a common payments problem faced by customers to provide them with a better service.
Manish recognised that a number of customers faced a similar issue with payments due to incomplete information on their remittance forms, which was resulting in funds falling into a suspense account each month which could not be reconciled. He spearheaded an initiative to improve the process for customers by enhancing tools, search mechanisms and structured monitoring. The efforts of Manish and his colleagues have resulted in successful remittances rising from 72% to 98% and will save £167k annually.
Colleagues winner: Chennai Citizenship Ambassadors
The Chennai Citizenship Ambassadors team has engaged more than 4,000 employees to actively support a variety of Citizenship initiatives that have delivered positive societal benefits to the local community.
Exceeding the targets they set themselves by more than 70%, the Citizenship Ambassadors team inspired employees to volunteer for more than 17,000 hours in 2015. From supporting small businesses with financial planning and writing business plans, to creating a ride-sharing initiative to minimise CO2 emissions, and developing an apprenticeship programme, the team has been an active supporter of Barclays’ Citizenship agenda.
Partnerships winner: Audrey Chew
In partnership with government ministry Infocomm Development Authority (IDA), Audrey brought digital skills to young and elderly people in Singapore.
Recognising a common goal and the opportunity to leverage the Barclays Digital Driving Licence, Audrey and her team partnered with the IDA to reach younger and older people to help enhance their digital skills, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Clients and Customers winner: Reinette van der Merwe – Rhino debit card
The Rhino debit card is an innovative product which promotes awareness and action for the conservation of rhinos in Botswana.
The partnership with the Kalahari Conservation Society (KCS), was introduced in Botswana in 2015 and is the first of its kind on the market. The product aims to ensure consistent and sustainable financial support to youths, who aspire to run their own businesses related to conservation. The project, now in its second year, sees more than 900 youths attend financial literacy and conservation sessions. To date, 20 young people, have attended a professional course in conservation and have been placed in jobs at game parks.
Colleagues winner: Proud to be Barclays Committee
Since 2009, Barclays’ colleagues have been supporting the Bless a Child Foundation, an NGO that provides care and support services to children suffering from cancer.
Colleagues have assisted the foundation in raising awareness, fundraising and volunteering. The tremendous input from the colleagues has enabled the organisation to secure a new centre for their operations, which also serves to provide accommodation for children in their care. Colleagues have increased the profile of the organisation which has helped in securing additional funding to continue their work.
To date, colleagues have volunteered over 1,800 hours at the home and raised a total of 305,823,123 UGX.
Partnerships winner: Diepsloot Mountain Bike Academy (DMA)
The team runs a sports development programme which uses cycling to empower the youth of Diepsloot.
The academy beneficiaries have access to life coaching, skills-based training, educational support with maths and English and life skills mentoring. To date, the academy has had a direct impact on more than 240 youths in Diepsloot.
In 2015, we received almost 900 nominations from across 31 countries, with finalists nominated in our three Citizenship pillars: The way we do business, Contributing to growth and Supporting our communities.
Following an internal regional and global judging process, comprising Barclays leaders from across the world, the winners were chosen by an external panel of NGOs, charities and global experts.
Path to Prime Team, Barclaycard US
The team developed ‘Path to Prime’, an innovative product helping customers with poor credit histories earn their way to a prime credit status.
Linkage Banking Team, Uganda US
Working with the Grameen Foundation, the team identified a unique way to scale up the financial inclusion of savings groups in rural Uganda, using mobile technology.
Shawn PM Golhar, Investment Bank, US
Shawn co-founded America Needs You (ANY), a mentoring and professional development not-for-profit organisation, providing intensive skills training to more than 500 low-income, first-generation college students.
Special Recognition Award: Overcoming Challenges Team, Operations and Technology, UK
The team delivered Overcoming Challenges and interview skills workshops to support young people in prison during the pre-release process, ultimately helping them become more productive members of their communities.
People’s Vote winner: Pressley Ridge, Associação de Solidariedade Social
As part of our 325th anniversary celebrations, Barclays is donating a total of £325,000 to projects, nominated by our employees, which help young people achieve their ambitions. More than 500 projects were nominated. Five regional winners each received £45,000. You voted for your favourite and Pressley Ridge will now receive an additional £100,000 donation.

The way we do business
Africa CRES Team, Barclays Africa Group, South Africa
Partnering with national energy provider, Eskom, the Africa CRES Team significantly reduced the Johannesburg Campus’s reliance on the national grid for its energy supply. The team structured a plan – the first of its kind – enabling the Barclays Energy Centre to co-power the Campus during peak usage periods, so that it could function off the grid. The project has delivered huge environmental and business benefits, decreasing the demand for electricity by 2,230,000kWh in 2014 – enough to power 2,230 households. Carbon emissions have been reduced by 1,614 tonnes and a net profit of R2.8m has been created by selling energy back to Eskom.
Sudhir Kundu, Operations and Technology, India
Sudhir spearheaded the improvement of cash control processes, enhancing the customer experience, reducing the risks of losing customer money and saving the business 800 hours annually investigating claims. Sudhir conducted a detailed analysis of transactions to identify mapping issues which meant that customer payments were getting booked into incorrect accounts. This also required intense investigation to make sure corrective measures could take place for existing accounts. Incredibly, it has resulted in outstanding transaction cases being reduced from 1200 to less than 45. The project has also saved approximately 400 re-classifications of journals with a value of £12m and eliminated manual processes to significantly reduce the chances of incorrect transactions taking place.
SEC Be Green Project, Barclaycard, Portugal and Spain
In 2014, Barclaycard Spain followed the success of the 2008 ‘Be Green’ campaign in Portugal, to encourage customers to sign up for e-statements. Since the project began, 241,000 customers have gone paperless. The team worked collaboratively across the business to make sure e-statements were promoted at every customer touch point, and pledged to plant a tree for each customer that made the switch. To date, 52% of customers in Portugal and 24% in Spain receive e-statements and more than 240,000 trees have been planted, reforesting 253 hectares across Southern Europe. These efforts are helping make a real difference to the way we do business – making smart changes that benefit customers whilst also delivering a positive social impact.
Accessibility and Inclusion Team, PCB Corporate Banking, PCB Customer and Client Experience and PCB Personal Banking, UK
The team worked closely with Barclays’ Digital Eagles and Corporate client Abbeyfield to tackle loneliness among the elderly population, by providing digital education sessions to help them keep in touch with their loved ones. Dedicating a huge amount of time and energy, the team developed a large-scale awareness and education campaign as part of International Day for Older People. In one day , 93 workshops across 200 Abbeyfield care homes around the world were delivered, teaching elderly people how to use Skype. In parallel, ‘Tea and Teach’ sessions were held across 126 branches for customers in the UK, as well as a thought leadership event in London in partnership with Abbeyfield. More than 150 Digital Eagles – a network of Barclays colleagues – advocated on behalf of the agenda, raising the profile of issues faced by elderly people. The campaign saw 1,000 participants benefit from the development of new skills, increasing their ability to stay in touch with friends and family.
Contributing to growth
Women in Leadership and Return on Disability Team, Investment Bank and Legal, US and UK
The team pioneered the development of diversity-focused investment products with the intent of catalysing social change through the public markets. In a first for the industry, the Barclays Women in Leadership Index and Exchange Traded Notes (ETNs) track and provide investors with exposure to US-based public companies with gender-diverse executive leadership and governance. The team also launched Return on Disability ETNs, which provides investors with exposure to US-based public companies that have acted to attract and serve people with disabilities. Very few channels exist for clients looking to make investments in gender and disability-related products, helping to establish Barclays as a leader in diversity-focused investment products. The products are expected to scale over the coming years as investors are increasingly looking for ways to invest in socially-responsible themes.
Supplier Diversity Team, Operations and Technology, Investment Bank, PCB Corporate, PCB Wealth and Legal, Singapore, UK and US
Barclays’ Supplier Diversity Day provided a platform for UK-based diverse suppliers to be considered for contracting opportunities and receive specialised knowledge from our banking and legal teams. After months of preparation, the cross-continental effort engaged colleagues in Singapore and London who interviewed more than 90 diverse suppliers from across the supplier diversity spectrum – small and medium-size enterprises and companies majority owned, controlled and operated by women, ethnic minorities, people with disabilities and LGBT entrepreneurs. The goal was to qualify prospective diverse suppliers for potential contracting opportunities with Barclays – or to expand opportunities for those already doing business with us. Working with the Business Units and Group Legal, the team introduced six masterclasses with the theme ‘From Micro to IPO’. The objective of the masterclasses was to help the entrepreneurs think about ways of using banking and finance to grow their businesses. The classes covered Mergers and Acquisitions, Intellectual Property, VAT, Debt Financing, Equity Financing (IPOs) and Wealth Management. Some of the businesses that attended the event have been invited to compete in request for proposal competitions, others have received contracts. The most prominent success was the awarding of a global contract to a woman-owned business that was invited to participate in an RFP immediately after the event.
Team School Café, Barclaycard, Legal, Operations and Technology and Risk, Germany
Strengthening youth employability is vital to economic growth. For the past two years, the team has helped students in Hamburg set up and manage a social enterprise – their school cafe. A group of 11 Barclaycard colleagues have been involved in the project since its inception, dedicating more than 70 hours to help students build their strategic, marketing, legal, PR and financial skills. The team’s efforts have been instrumental in helping young people understand what it takes to run a profitable business. The café is now open daily, making 700 Euros in the second year of operation. In recognition of the partnership’s success, Barclaycard Germany recently received the ‘School Award’ from the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce.
Juliet Rogan, PCB Corporate Banking, UK
Juliet led the team to create an innovative financing solution for Kano, a fast-growing tech company that produces low cost build-your-own-computer kits, which teach young people how to code. Despite a successful launch and a proven track record of their management team, Kano was not established enough for Barclays to lend to. Juliet recognised the company’s potential and strategically balanced its interests and priorities with that of Barclays’, to leverage a risk guarantee from the Barclays’ Social Innovation Facility. This enabled Kano to secure a working capital facility, helping it to scale quickly and make the product accessible to new markets. As a result, Kano’s kick-starter campaign has raised more than $1.5m with 13,000 backers. Kano’s revenue has also surpassed expectations, with projected sales figures at 54,000 units in 2015.

André Ross, Barclays Africa Group, South Africa
With little access to opportunities, the prospects for young people in Diepsloot, Johannesburg, are limited. André co-founded a not-for-profit organisation, using cycling to help empower young people to become leaders in their community.

The Prayas programme was developed exclusively by the team, helping underprivileged women in India gain the skills needed to generate an income for the first time.

With high unemployment rates across Europe, colleagues hosted ‘innovation camps’ to help more than 170 students develop their entrepreneurial skills.

The way we do business
Trade and Working Capital Asia Team, Singapore
In 2010, the Consumer Goods Forum announced the ambition to achieve zero net deforestation by 2020. As part of the Banking Environment Initiative working group, the team developed the Sustainable Shipment Letter of Credit, which certifies that goods have been produced in a sustainable way. Clients can now track the sustainable origin within the existing Letter of Credit structure, an internationally recognised way to reduce counterparty risk in trade transactions. This promotes sustainable sourcing and has won considerable support from influential industry stakeholders.
Jean-Yves has volunteered with ‘La Fédération de Femmes 3000’ in France for the past 10 years. As a result, he has empowered women to raise their personal and professional aspirations in areas where female representation has traditionally been low. Members have gone into the fields of law, medicine, science, culture, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Health and the Senate. As Administrator, he works to develop the organisation’s strategy, and also mentors female colleagues at Barclays, to promote their professional development.
Will introduced the first way for British Sign Language (BSL) users to contact Barclays instantly without having to wait to visit a branch. A sign video service on our website enables customers to have a secure ‘video chat’ with a registered interpreter. Previously customers had to book an appointment in a branch to meet a sign language interpreter, a process that sometimes took six weeks. This change is positively impacting thousands of deaf customers, and it is the first service of its kind for Barclays.
Contributing to growth
Dream Accounts team
In the US, low-income students are four times more likely to graduate if they have a savings account. Unique in the US, a ‘Dream Account’ allows teenagers to be primary account holders and rewards them for good savings behaviour.
With funding from Barclays’ Social Innovation Facility, the team worked in partnership with 1,000 low-income students to develop a new savings account and an innovative app that connects teenagers to share tips on getting ready for college. In the first three months after launch, 11,000 Dream Accounts were opened. Watch the video to find out more (new window).
Tarun led a six-month paid internship to help tackle youth unemployment in Noida, India. Students were taught technical, communication and presentation skills, combined with an in-depth understanding of business. Tarun played a vital role in developing young talent and supporting them to gain the skills and confidence they need to achieve their personal and professional goals. To date, two interns have secured work placements.
Barclaycard Spain team
In Spain, 55% of people aged 16 to 24 are unemployed. With the economy increasingly dependent on tourism, the team launched the Kitchen of Opportunities catering project. To date, 100 young people at high risk of social exclusion have benefited by learning cookery, English and money skills to improve their job prospects. The apprenticeships provided practical work experience, and 12 young people have secured permanent jobs in Madrid as a result of the team’s efforts.
Oliver agreed a risk guarantee with Barclays’ Social Innovation Facility to secure a £1m loan for Azuri Technologies to fund 32,000 solar installations in rural Africa. The ‘pay as you go’ solar units give Kenyan families access to affordable power and light as an alternative to highly toxic kerosene lamps. As well as improved health and environmental benefits, the units provide employment opportunities through local distribution networks. They also enable adults and children to study and work after dark.
Supporting our communities
As Chairman of the non-profit organisation, Connections, Larry has overseen a transformation of the prison healthcare system in Delaware. He led the Connections team to win a landmark contract, ensuring continuity of care for 25,000 inmates each year – both in prison and after release. To complement its rehabilitation services, Connections provides vocational and educational training to support employment after prison. Connections also employs more than 600 healthcare workers and ensures funds are reinvested in improved services for the community.
Barclays Green Haven Mavens
The Green Haven halfway house supports people recovering from drug addiction. The team used their professional skills to build a computer lab and provided residents with training to develop their IT knowledge. The project enables participants to stay connected to their support networks and improves their ability to secure employment. The team volunteered 300 hours of work and personal time, helping 41 residents develop confidence as they reintegrated into society.
Leaders in Community Advisory team
Leaders in Community is a charity in East London run by young people, for young people. The team used their professional skills to help the organisation reshape its strategy, staffing, marketing and financial management.
