Future of Croydon travel business secured
The future of a long established family owned travel business in Croydon, Coach Holidays.com, has been secured after it was bought by local travel agency business Go Travel.
Coach Holidays.com can trace its history in Croydon back 70 years to 1948 and had grown to become one of the leading coach holiday websites in the UK, employing ten people at its retail outlet in George Street. During that time the company sold in excess of £100 million worth of holidays.
Although the company was doing well, after the sad passing of two directors the remaining members of the founding family were looking to sell the business.
Go Travel Ltd was founded in Chislehurst in 1999 by Chris and Penny Roberts and their son Mike. The business expanded with outlets in Petts Wood, Locksbottom, Sevenoaks and Blackheath. The company has a team of 28 people who all travel extensively and are able to offer their personal experience in helping customers to find the right holiday for them.
The company has managed to flourish in the face of larger competitors by remaining independent which means it can offer holidays from hundreds of different tour operators and airlines, hotels and villas around the world.
Go Travel Ltd Director Mike Roberts was introduced to Elle and Barbara Flin, members of the original founding family of Coach Holidays.com, by Barclays Relationship Director James Carden. Mike said: “I could see that this was a successful company and was complementary to our own so it made sense to combine the two businesses. I wanted to maintain a strong presence in Croydon so have moved the business across the road to offices in Woolwich House where we run the businesses effectively and can still meet and support customers. I was delighted that all of the members of the team stayed with the businesses so we have been able to benefit from their excellent contacts and experience. We have ambitious plans for the business and I am really confident about the future.”
Sarah Jones, MP for Croydon South, visited the business to congratulate them on the next stage of their development. “Sarah Jones MP said: “It was such a pleasure to meet the team and hear about the proud history of the company. Local businesses are the backbone of our economy and I congratulate everyone involved for securing a sustainable future for this longstanding Croydon business.”
James Carden, Barclays Relationship Director said: “It was a pleasure to be able to introduce two of my customers to one another and with such a satisfactory outcome for both parties. It is clear that the businesses will both benefit from the tie up and I look forward to supporting the combined group long into the future.”
Mike Roberts continued: “I am grateful to James, and to Barclays for their support with this project and generally over the years. It’s a great example of how a bank can add value to a relationship with a client.”
