John McFarlane is a leading figure in global banking and in the City of London, having spent over 40 years in the sector, mostly at main Board level. He is Chairman of Barclays PLC.
John is also the chairman of TheCityUK, a member of the Supervisory Board of Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield SE and a Non-Executive Director of Old Oak Holdings Limited and the Financial Services Trade and Investment Board. He is a member of the following: International Monetary Conference; European Financial Roundtable; Cranfield School of Management Advisory Board, Institut International d’Etudes Bancaires and the President’s Committee Confederation of British Industry.
John was previously Chairman of Aviva plc, FirstGroup plc, and the Australian Bankers Association. In his earlier career John was Chief Executive Officer of Australia and New Zealand Banking Group for 10 years, and prior to that Group Executive Director of Standard Chartered plc, and head of Citibank in the UK and Ireland.
John’s former Non-Executive Directorships include The Royal Bank of Scotland, Capital Radio and the Council of The London Stock Exchange.
Born in Dumfries and attended Dumfries Academy, John has an MA from the University of Edinburgh, and an MBA from Cranfield, and studied finance at the London Business School. He has banking and securities fellowships in Hong Kong, Australia and the UK, and was the inaugural recipient of Cranfield School of Management Distinguished Alumnus Award.
